Preston North End produced a clinical and controlled away performance to beat Southampton 2-0 at St Mary's, a result that lifted the Lilywhites back into the Championship play-off places and dragged Saints closer to the relegation battle. Lewis Dobbin struck late in the first half before Mads Frokjaer-Jensen finished the job in stoppage time, on a night when the home side were loudly booed and the pressure on head coach Will Still and the club's hierarchy intensified.
Southampton had long spells of possession but created little of real note, their best opportunity coming when Caspar Jander curled against the crossbar at 1-0 down. Preston, shorn of nine injured players and with others carrying knocks, defended with organisation and discipline, carried an intermittent but dangerous threat on the counter-attack and, in the words of head coach Paul Heckingbottom, got 'a lot of things right' in what he regarded as a template away display.
Cagey opening as Scienza catches the eye
Southampton began with intent and saw plenty of the ball in the early stages, yet for a while both sides managed only half-chances. Leo Scienza's inswinging delivery from the left bounced all the way through to Ronnie Edwards at the far post, and when the defender pulled the ball back, Flynn Downes saw his shot crowded out inside the six-yard box. At the other end, a rare early raid from Preston almost released Alfie Devine through the middle, but on a soaking pitch the ball skidded away from him and he could only stretch to poke his effort wide.
