Alfie Devine’s spectacular first-half strike earned Preston North End a 1-0 victory at Derby County, delivering the Lilywhites’ first Championship win on the road this season and prolonging the Rams’ wait for a home success.
The on-loan Tottenham midfielder arrowed a fierce effort into the top corner midway through a contest that Preston largely controlled before the break, only for Derby to respond with a much livelier display after half-time. Patrick Agyemang twice went close to an equaliser and caused sustained problems for the visitors, but Daniel Iversen and a well-drilled Preston defence held firm to leave Derby 21st in the table while keeping Preston up in fifth, a point behind second-placed Stoke City.
Visitors Take Control After Cagey Opening
For 20 minutes the game at Pride Park was finely balanced, with both sides feeling their way into the contest. Former Derby winger Lewis Dobbin carried Preston’s main attacking threat in that period, twice driving at his old club’s defence and hinting at the damage he could cause, but clear chances were at a premium as the two teams largely cancelled each other out.
