Denzel Hall's powerful volley proved to be the matchwinner as Rotherham United edged out Exeter City 1-0. The Dutchman struck on 39 minutes after a cross was cleared into his path by Ed Turns, and his emphatic finish was enough to separate the sides.
Rotherham had the better of the contest and threatened repeatedly, but Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth kept his side in the game with a string of saves. The visitors threatened a late leveller, only to be denied by the woodwork of fine margins and an offside flag in added time.
All The Opportunities Falling Home
Rotherham had early chances from crosses but Jordan Hugill and Kion Etete saw their headers kept out by diving saves from Whitworth. With all the opportunities falling to the home side, Hugill was denied again after bulldozing his way through, and then Hall's shot was agonisingly wide.
