Leif Davis' superb late header gave Ipswich Town a 2-1 victory at Derby County, strengthening the visitors' Championship promotion challenge and checking the home side's push for the play-offs. Derby skipper Lewis Travis had earlier endured the worst possible start by heading a corner into his own net, before Rhian Brewster's second-half penalty appeared to have earned John Eustace's team a valuable point.
Instead, Davis settled a fiercely contested game with a thumping finish from Kasey McAteer's cross, and Derby's afternoon got even worse when Travis was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time. Ipswich were made to work hard for the points after failing to build on their early dominance, but ultimately found enough quality in the final third to leave Pride Park with a result that could prove significant in the promotion race.
Early Own Goal Hands Ipswich the Initiative
Ipswich started on the front foot and seized control of the contest almost immediately. Their early pressure paid off in just the eighth minute, albeit with considerable assistance from the hosts. Anis Mehmeti whipped in a corner that seemed to wrong-foot Derby captain Lewis Travis, who could only steer his header beyond goalkeeper Josh Vickers and into his own net. It was a nightmare moment for the midfielder and gave Ipswich the platform they wanted to dictate the tempo.
