Brighton came from two goals down to beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford and knock them out of the Carabao Cup in the third round. Shea Lacey and Mason Mount had put United in front by the eighth minute, but Charalampos Kostoulas, Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper scored between the 45th and 69th minutes to turn the tie around.
It was the first time in 50 years that United had lost at home after leading by two goals; the last was a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham in September 1976. The exit at the first hurdle for a second straight year came three days after the Manchester derby defeat by 10-man City, and the final whistle was met with boos.
Carrick said afterwards: "We can't accept that as a group. I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that's on me."
