The turning point came in first-half stoppage time, when Gus Scott-Morriss was shown a straight red card for a serious foul in the 46th minute, reducing Oldham to ten men for the entire second half. Temple, who scored the decisive own goal, had been sent on for Calum Kavanagh at the start of the second half.
Eight cards were shown in all: two Colchester players were cautioned in the first half, while Oldham picked up six across the match, from Scott-Morriss's red to late yellows for Elliott Nevitt and Donervon Daniels as the visitors chased an equaliser. Colchester made four substitutions across the second half; Oldham used the same number.
