Zan Vipotnik's predatory first-half volley earned Swansea City a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bristol City at the Swansea.Com Stadium, extending the hosts' outstanding home form and keeping their outside Championship play-off hopes alive. The division's leading scorer was once again in the right place at the right time, punishing a defensive miscue to claim his 16th league goal of the season and secure a seventh win from Swansea's last eight home league games.
The scoreline, however, barely conveyed the balance of a contest in which Bristol City were the more menacing side for long spells. Sinclair Armstrong and substitute Emil Riis Jakobsen both struck the woodwork, Delano Burgzorg and others went close, and Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux was kept busier than his opposite number Radek Vitek. But Gerhard Struber's side paid the price for a lack of cutting edge, slipping to a fifth defeat in 10 league outings and dropping to 12th, four points outside the top six, while Swansea climbed to 15th and remain in the chasing pack.
Armstrong sets early tone as Robins take control
Bristol City signalled their intent inside seven minutes. Armstrong picked up the ball tight to the by-line and, with a flash of skill, nutmegged Swansea captain Ben Cabango before driving towards the near post from a tight angle. His low effort beat Vigouroux but cannoned back off the upright, the ball rolling agonisingly across the face of goal and away to safety as the Swansea keeper looked on in relief.
