Jack Clarke struck twice as Ipswich Town beat play-off chasers Bristol City 2-0 at Portman Road, a result that extended the Tractor Boys' winning run to four league games and propelled them into second place in the Championship table. The winger's goals in the eighth and 55th minutes settled an intense contest in which both sides created chances but Ipswich proved more clinical in front of goal.
The victory saw Town leapfrog Middlesbrough by a point, with Boro not in action until Wednesday, and left them eight points behind table-toppers Coventry. Crucially for Kieran McKenna's side, they retain a game in hand on both Middlesbrough and the leaders, keeping them firmly positioned in the chasing pack. Bristol City, meanwhile, will reflect on missed opportunities at key moments and a performance that manager Gerhard Struber felt did not match the sharpness required against opposition of this level.
For long stretches, the game was shaped by fine margins. Ipswich carved out good openings either side of half-time, only to be denied by some outstanding goalkeeping from City's Czech stopper Radek Vitek, while Town's own keeper Christian Walton atoned for a costly error with an important save. In between, there were spells where City enjoyed control without finding a breakthrough, and by the time Clarke drilled in his second, the damage to the visitors' hopes was irreparable.
