Cheltenham Town began their League Two campaign with a 2-1 win over Rotherham United at the EV Charger Points Stadium, in front of 4,467.
Charlie McCann put the hosts ahead in the 29th minute. Rotherham levelled through Jili Buyabu in the 61st, but Cheltenham restored their lead nine minutes later through Jake Evans, on as a half-time substitute for Shaun McWilliams.
Rotherham had the better of general play, finishing with 59.8% possession to Cheltenham's 40.2% and 19 shots to the hosts' 6, five of those on target to Cheltenham's four. Cheltenham won five corners to Rotherham's four. Four players were booked, and no reds shown: Rotherham's Kian Spence, and Cheltenham's Jonathan Tomkinson, Shaun McWilliams and Pierce Sweeney.
Cheltenham made five substitutions, including McWilliams at the break for match-winner Evans and further changes for Kirsten Otchere, Ryan Broom, Jordan Shipley and Charlie McCann. Rotherham brought on Tom Bradshaw, Ossama Ashley and Ar'Jany Martha, the last of those replacing scorer Buyabu in the 78th minute.
