Fleetwood Town began their League Two season with a 1-0 win at Chesterfield's SMH Group Stadium, Ched Evans settling it with the game's only goal in the 34th minute, in front of an attendance of 7,856.
Chesterfield had the better of the underlying numbers, holding 66.6% of possession to Fleetwood's 33.4% and out-shooting the visitors 16 to 14, with five corners to Fleetwood's one; Fleetwood were the more clinical side, though, putting seven of their attempts on target against Chesterfield's three. Four yellow cards were shown, no reds: Chesterfield's Kyle McFadzean in the 27th minute for a foul, plus three Fleetwood bookings, Evans himself in the 29th, Raffaele Cirino in the 47th, and Shaun Rooney for time-wasting in the 80th.
Fleetwood made their first change just after the hour, Andy Cannon replacing Kane Thompson-Sommers in the 54th minute, before Danny Andrew came on for Raffaele Cirino in the 70th and Aaron Loupalo-Bi replaced goalscorer Evans in the 77th. Chesterfield made a double substitution in the 66th minute, sending on Fraser Bryden and Liam Mandeville, then a flurry of late changes brought on Tom Naylor and Danny Anisjko in the 86th minute and Malik Owolabi-Belewu in the 87th.
