Charlton Athletic beat Cheltenham Town 3-1 at the EV Charger Points Stadium in this English League Cup second-round tie, three first-half goals settling the contest before Cheltenham replied after the break, in front of an attendance of 3,119.
Matty Godden put Charlton ahead in the 21st minute, assisted by Sonny Carey, who doubled the lead himself two minutes later, in the 23rd minute, set up by Nathaniel Chalobah. Tyreece Campbell made it three in the 36th minute, finishing a move started by Conor Coventry. Cheltenham's reply came in the 54th minute through George Miller, assisted by Joe Tomlinson.
Charlton controlled possession, 54.5% to 45.5%, and had the better of the chances, registering 17 attempts on goal to Cheltenham's seven, nine of them on target against two, with Cheltenham's goalkeeper making six saves. Tomlinson picked up the match's only caution, a 70th-minute yellow for a foul. Both sides used their full allocation of substitutes: Cheltenham made a triple change in the 64th minute as they chased the game, with two more changes in the 78th minute, while Charlton made changes across the 69th, 77th and 91st minutes.
