Carvalho and Thiago strike against the run of play as Brentford frustrate Bournemouth in EFL Cup

— Match Report

Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago scored against the run of play as Brentford beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the second round of the EFL Cup, sealing a place in round three for new boss Keith Andrews.

It was Andrews' second victory in the space of four days after Saturday's 1-0 win over Aston Villa, with Bournemouth finishing the all-Premier League tie with 10 men after Julian Araujo was sent off in stoppage time.

Cherries Dominate But Cannot Find the Breakthrough

Bournemouth handed full debuts to summer signings Ben Gannon Doak and Amine Adli and took just two minutes to register the first shot on target, Junior Kroupi's low effort awkwardly saved by Hakon Valdimarsson. Julio Soler's deflected shot then struck the left upright with the goalkeeper beaten, before captain Ryan Christie hit the woodwork with a deflected 25-yard strike.
