Sonny Carey's second-half equaliser earned Charlton Athletic a battling 1-1 draw at Southampton, denying the hosts victory on the night former Saints boss Nathan Jones returned to face his old club. Ross Stewart's fifth goal of the season had put Tonda Eckert's side in front shortly after the interval, but Charlton's top scorer struck back from the edge of the box to ensure the points were shared.
Southampton dominated territory and the ball, at one stage enjoying more than 75 per cent of the possession and creating the game's clearest chances, with Leo Scienza at the heart of their attacking play. Yet Charlton defended with discipline and resolve, survived a series of scares that included Ryan Manning hitting the crossbar, and then held out through a fiery finale that featured a mass confrontation sparked by Flynn Downes and Conor Coady, to claim a point that lifts them to 17th, while Saints slip to 11th.
Southampton's Early Pressure Meets Stubborn Resistance
Southampton set the tone inside the opening minutes as they immediately pushed Charlton back and began probing at the visitors' defensive line. In just the third minute, Tom Fellows floated a cross to the far post where Scienza, left in space, volleyed goalwards, only for centre-back Lloyd Jones to race back and hook the ball off the line with a desperate, diving clearance.
