Sonny Carey and Lyndon Dykes scored first-half goals to give Charlton Athletic a 2-0 victory over ten-man Leicester City, turning Andy King's first match as interim boss into a damaging defeat at the King Power Stadium.
Foxes defender Caleb Okoli was sent off in the 15th minute for pulling back Miles Leaburn as the last man, and although Charlton had an early Harry Clarke header controversially ruled out, they seized control through Carey's seventh goal of the campaign and Dykes' composed finish before the interval. Leicester improved after the break and Jordan Ayew struck a penalty against the post, but Thomas Kaminski and a disciplined Charlton back line ensured Nathan Jones' side saw out a thoroughly deserved away win.
Early Red Card Reshapes King's First Afternoon in Charge
The tone of the afternoon was set inside the opening quarter of an hour, when Leicester's centre-back Caleb Okoli was dismissed and King's carefully prepared game plan was, in his words, effectively ripped up. Leaburn had spun in behind onto a clever flick from Carey and looked set to race clear, only for Okoli to pull him back on the edge of the box. Referee Andrew Kitchen adjudged the Italian to be the last defender and showed a straight red card, leaving Leicester to play the remaining 75 minutes and lengthy stoppage time a man down.
