Tyreece Campbell stepped off the bench to deliver a vital goal for Charlton Athletic and deny Birmingham City another home victory in a captivating 1-1 draw at St Andrew's. The 22-year-old Jamaica international struck with his very first touch midway through the second half, cancelling out Christoph Klarer's earlier header and ending Charlton's run of five consecutive Championship defeats.
Birmingham had dominated for long stretches, especially before the interval, when they racked up 17 efforts on Thomas Kaminski's goal and saw Demarai Gray hit the woodwork. Klarer's header from Tommy Doyle's free-kick appeared to have put Chris Davies' side on course for another profitable afternoon at home, only for Charlton to raise their tempo after the break and find a route back into the game through Campbell.
The result carried weight for both sides. Birmingham, who had scored 14 times across their previous four home matches, were looking to respond to back-to-back away defeats at Southampton and QPR but were left to rue missed chances and a sloppy concession. Charlton, by contrast, emerged with their first point since November 4, underpinned by an improved second-half display and a dogged defensive effort in the closing stages.
