Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a 96th-minute winner as Leeds United edged Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 at Elland Road, dealing a heavy blow to the Seagulls' hopes of qualifying for European football next season. In the sixth minute of added time the England striker latched onto a weak backpass from Jan Paul van Hecke, beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and rolled home a composed finish to spark wild celebrations among the home support.
It was a result that defied the run of play. Brighton were the dominant side for long spells, particularly after the interval, yet failed to find the net despite registering 19 efforts on goal. Remarkably, Calvert-Lewin's 14th league goal of the season was Leeds' only shot on target on an afternoon when Daniel Farke's relaxed, safety-assured side dug in and made the most of their solitary opportunity.
A tepid first half that finally sparked into life
There was a carnival feel at kick-off as balloons and a beach ball were cleared from the pitch, with home fans relaxed having guaranteed their top-flight survival seven days earlier. Brighton settled quickly, with Carlos Baleba's early shot easily held by Karl Darlow before Calvert-Lewin was denied at the other end by a timely Van Hecke intervention. Daniel James curled a 20-yard effort wide and Joël Veltman's close-range shot following a corner was blocked as both sides traded early half-chances in a contest of shared possession.
