Burton Albion condemned Leicester City to a 2-1 defeat at King Power Stadium on Saturday, Leicester's first loss of the League One season and their first home league game at the level for 17 years. Matthew Dennis put the visitors ahead inside four minutes and Kgaogelo Chauke doubled the lead in the 24th minute. Leicester's afternoon worsened four minutes later when Oliver Skipp was shown a straight red card for a serious foul on Curtis Tilt, reducing the hosts to 10 men.
Wes Burns pulled a goal back in the 41st minute to give Leicester hope, but they could not find an equaliser despite dominating the ball for the rest of the game: the hosts finished with 73% possession and level with Burton on 13 shots, though only three of Leicester's found the target to Burton's six. Fans around King Power Stadium booed the players off at full time.
Manager Russell Martin took the blame afterwards. "We have to have some really honest conversations," he said. "I take responsibility as a manager, so if I haven't prepared them psychologically well enough, we must look at that. One team wanted it during the opening 25 minutes and were hungry. We weren't, definitely not hungry enough." He added: "We've already watched the goals back as a group and highlighted bits that we don't want to be us. We have to make sure that is our worst 25 minutes of the season."
The defeat leaves Leicester 18th in the table with a single point from two games, a week after they were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Notts County on their League One return. Burton, who had drawn their opener 1-1 with Stevenage, moved up to seventh with their first win of the season. Martin's side turn to the Carabao Cup against Ipswich Town in midweek before a League One trip to MK Dons, with changes expected. "I expect some people to come into the team and be really hungry to stake a claim for the shirt because after today there will be opportunities," he said.
