Burn and Joelinton head Newcastle past Athletic Club at St James' Park

— Match Report

A pair of headers from Dan Burn and Joelinton powered Newcastle United to a 2-0 home win over Athletic Club in the Champions League, lifting Eddie Howe's side into the top eight of the table.

Burn opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a bullet header from Kieran Trippier's free-kick, before Joelinton nodded in from Harvey Barnes' cross four minutes after the restart to secure a third straight European victory without conceding.

A Response After West Ham

Howe kept faith with nine of the players who had started Sunday's 3-1 defeat at West Ham, and the experienced spine of his team repaid that trust. "We navigated today really well after the weekend," Howe said. "It was important we responded mentally. Our psychology was really good."
