Delano Burgzorg climbed off the bench to fire Middlesbrough to a dramatic 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, denying new Baggies head coach Eric Ramsay a point in his first game in charge. The substitute smashed home in the 90th minute to settle a breathless Championship contest in which West Brom had fought back from two goals down to level.
An unfortunate Charlie Taylor own goal, after Alex Gilbert's effort had come back off the post, gave Kim Hellberg's second-placed side a half-time lead, before Sam Silvera doubled the advantage on the counter. West Brom responded with an Isaac Price free-kick and a composed finish from substitute Jed Wallace, only for Burgzorg to restore Boro's advantage at the death and inflict the hosts' 14th league defeat of the season – a tally bettered only by bottom club Sheffield Wednesday – while moving the visitors to within three points of leaders Coventry.
Early West Brom Intensity, Then Boro Take Charge
Ramsay's tenure almost began in perfect fashion when West Brom flew out of the blocks. Inside the opening exchanges, Aune Heggebo robbed Luke Ayling high up the pitch and drove into the box, but the Norwegian's effort was smothered by the alert Sol Brynn, who stood up strongly to prevent an early breakthrough.
