Bristol Rovers beat Newport County 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller at the Memorial Stadium on the second matchday of the League Two season, recovering from an early setback to claim their first league win.

Harrison Biggins put Newport ahead inside the opening minute, before Ben Purrington levelled for Rovers in the 45th minute. Fabrizio Cavegn put the hosts in front in the 52nd, and Newport's Lee Jenkins turned into his own net four minutes later to make it 3-1. Shaquille Gwengwe pulled one back for Newport in the 60th minute, only for Bobby Kamwa to restore Rovers' two-goal cushion in the 73rd. Cole Jarvis scored again for Newport in the 90th minute, but Cavegn completed his brace in the 98th to settle it.

Clinton Mola was booked in the seventh minute for Rovers; Kamwa (74th) and Newport's Ciarán Brennan (75th) were also cautioned.

Rovers dominated possession (63.9% to 36.1%) and had 26 attempts on goal to Newport's eight, nine on target to three, with 11 corners to Newport's one.
