Bristol City beat Portsmouth 2-1 at Ashton Gate Stadium in Championship matchday three, with first-half and second-half goals from Lorent Tolaj and Jason Knight enough to hold off a stoppage-time response from the visitors.
Tolaj opened the scoring in the 30th minute and Knight doubled the lead in the 55th. Portsmouth pulled one back in the 94th minute through a Marezi penalty, the substitute forward having come on for Colby Bishop in the 62nd minute.
Bristol City picked up three bookings along the way: Rio Cardines in the 48th minute, Knight in the 66th and Rob Dickie in the 76th, with no cards shown to Portsmouth and no player sent off. Portsmouth made a half-time change, Ebou Adams replacing Rocco Shein, and used all five of their substitutes; Bristol City also made five changes, the first pair arriving in the 67th minute.
The result took Bristol City to four points from their opening three Championship games (one win, one draw, one defeat), while Portsmouth remain on three points from three, with a single win either side of two defeats.
