Walsall of League Two beat Championship side Bristol City 1-0 at Ashton Gate in the first round of the Carabao Cup, Aaron Pressley scoring in the 46th minute. City had 72% of the possession and 32 attempts to Walsall's eight, but could not find a way past a visiting side that defended its lead with real commitment.
It was the first competitive game in charge for both Michael Skubala at City and Lee Grant at Walsall, and a night of fresh faces: the two teams fielded 12 debutants between them, five for City and seven for the visitors.
Pressley Punishes a Cheap Goal
The goal came straight after the break. Reece Smith crossed low from the left and Pressley, arriving eight yards out, finished with his right foot. Skubala said after the match that "we gave them a cheap goal and created a lot of chances but didn't put the ball in the net."
