Brentford booked their place in the League Cup fourth round with a 2-1 win at League One Reading, Callum Wilson scoring after two minutes and Fábio Carvalho adding a second on the stroke of half-time. Paudie O'Connor headed a reply for the home side in the 71st minute, and the Premier League club had to hold on through a tense finish.
Reading created plenty and could point to a disallowed goal and a refused penalty appeal, but lacked the finishing to take the tie further. Brentford had 71% of the ball and eight shots on target to Reading's three.
Wilson and Carvalho Punish Reading Early
The opener took 136 seconds. A slip by O'Connor turned Dango Ouattara's pass into an opening and Wilson found the bottom left corner. It was the striker's second goal for Brentford since his summer arrival.
