Brentford end Grimsby's fairytale with five-star Carabao Cup statement

— Match Report

A much-changed Brentford cruised into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup for the fourth time in six seasons, ending Grimsby Town's memorable run in emphatic style with a 5-0 win at Blundell Park.

The League Two hosts, who knocked out Manchester United two months ago in one of the biggest shocks in EFL Cup history and followed it up by winning at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, were unable to add a Premier League scalp despite a lively opening. Three first-half goals settled the tie before two more after the break.

A bright Grimsby start that promised another upset

With around 8,000 home fans packed in and the wind biting on the banks of the Humber, Grimsby were all over the Premier League side in the opening 20 minutes, with over 60 per cent of the ball and the early chances. Charles Vernam and Evan Khouri saw efforts saved at the near post, and Khouri also headed straight at the goalkeeper when the game was still goalless.
