Bowat's bundled winner lifts Portsmouth clear and leaves Leicester in grave trouble

ยท Match Report

Portsmouth moved closer to Championship safety with a 1-0 victory over Leicester City, settled by Ibane Bowat's untidy but precious goal from Adrian Segecic's 63rd-minute corner. In a game short on quality for long spells, the decisive touch arrived in a crowded six-yard area at the back post and proved enough for the home side.

The result carried major consequences at both ends of the relegation fight. Portsmouth are now seven points clear of the drop zone with three matches left and can no longer be caught by Leicester, while Gary Rowett's side remain second from bottom and five points behind West Brom in 21st, with the Baggies still to play later on Saturday.

Tension outweighed fluency in a dour opening

Given the stakes, the first half never developed into an open contest. Leicester felt they should have had an early penalty when Patson Daka appeared to be caught by Conor Shaughnessy, but referee Gavin Ward waved away the appeals and the match quickly settled into a stop-start, nervous rhythm.
