Bolton Wanderers began the Championship season with a 2-1 win over Preston North End at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
Sam Dalby put Bolton ahead in the 13th minute, and Thierry Gale doubled the lead with a solo run in the 24th, giving the hosts a two-goal cushion at the break.
Preston pulled one back through substitute Jusef Erabi, who scored in the 85th minute after coming on 22 minutes earlier, but there was no way back for the visitors.
Five yellow cards were shown across the afternoon: three for Preston (Ali McCann, Jordan Thompson, Pol Valentín) and two for Bolton (Josh Sheehan, Chris Forino), with no player sent off. Bolton had the greater share of possession (55%) and more shots on target, six to three.
