Scott Twine gave the visitors a 32nd-minute lead, before Birmingham levelled nine minutes later when Bristol City goalkeeper Sam Tickle turned the ball into his own net. Substitute Dom Ballard, on for Lorent Tolaj in the 64th minute, restored Bristol City's lead in the 84th minute, but fellow substitute Demarai Gray, introduced for Carlos Vicente in the 61st minute, converted a stoppage-time penalty to level it again in the 94th.
Bright Osayi-Samuel and Patrick Roberts were both booked for Birmingham; Bristol City's Jason Knight picked up a yellow for dissent deep into stoppage time. No player was sent off. Birmingham made five substitutions in total, Bristol City five.
