Bottom of the Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers took another small but significant step forward with a hard-earned 0-0 draw against Newcastle United on a wet and windy afternoon at Molineux. The visitors arrived with the chance to climb to fifth, yet left frustrated after an underwhelming attacking display in which they failed to register a shot on target until the 85th minute despite enjoying the majority of the ball.
Nick Woltemade and Joelinton both misjudged inviting aerial openings, a back-post scramble somehow stayed out, Kieran Trippier clipped the side-netting with a free-kick and Bruno Guimaraes dragged a late effort wide as Eddie Howe's side laboured to turn 66% possession into genuine threat. In contrast, Wolves' organisation and work rate were warmly appreciated by the home support. Rob Edwards' team, buoyed by a big FA Cup win over Shrewsbury the previous weekend, are now unbeaten in four league matches and, while they remain 14 points from safety, they are at least salvaging pride.
Magpies Dominate the Ball but Not the Scoreboard
Newcastle controlled long stretches of the game, circulating possession in front of Wolves' compact shape and pushing the hosts back towards their own penalty area. The statistics told one part of the story: 66% of the ball for the visitors, who on paper had the greater attacking resources and the clearer incentive to chase three points. Yet they repeatedly struggled to connect promising approach play with any incision in the final third.
