Barnsley needed a penalty shootout to see off Wigan Athletic in this English League Cup second-round tie at Oakwell, winning 6-5 on penalties after 90 minutes finished level at 1-1. Dara Costelloe put Wigan ahead in the 39th minute, and Cameron McGeehan levelled for Barnsley in the 80th, sending the tie to penalties.
Barnsley had the better of possession, 60.2% to Wigan's 39.8%, though Wigan had more efforts on target, eight to Barnsley's four, from 13 shots to Barnsley's 11. Barnsley made two substitutions, sending on Jonathan Bland at half-time and Noah Town in the 81st minute; Wigan used four, introducing Tobias Brenan, Akeel Higgins, K'Marni Miller and Archie Harris between the 63rd and 82nd minutes. Rogan Ravenhill was the only player booked, shown a yellow card for dissent during the shootout.
Barnsley converted all six of their penalties, through Cameron McGeehan, Patrick Kelly, Sam Gale, Luca Connell, Reyes Cleary and Josh Earl. Wigan scored their first five, Max Power, James Carragher, Akeel Higgins, Jensen Weir and Fraser Murray all finding the net, before Jon Mellish's sixth kick was saved, sending Barnsley through 6-5 on penalties.
