Barnsley suffered an opening-day defeat at Oakwell, beaten 1-0 by Bromley on the first Saturday of the League One season. Victor Adeboyejo settled it in the 69th minute, two minutes after coming on as a substitute, for the only goal. Barnsley had the better of the possession and volume, finishing with 66.8% of the ball and 22 attempts on goal to Bromley's 13, eight on target against Bromley's four, but could not find a way through.
Jonathan Bland was the first booked, cautioned for a foul in the 37th minute. Three more yellow cards followed after the goal: Cameron McGeehan (Barnsley) and Mitch Pinnock (Bromley) both cautioned for arguing in the 76th minute, Will Hondermarck (Bromley) for a foul in the 90th and Makenzie Kirk (Barnsley) for dissent in the 94th. There were no red cards. Bromley made four substitutions between the 65th and 67th minutes, including Chanse Headman on for the injured Jacob Mendy and Adeboyejo himself on for Michael Cheek; Barnsley responded with Amani Richards and Kirk on together in the 70th minute, Noah Town on in the 84th and Callum Hudson on in the 96th.
The result leaves Barnsley 21st in the League One table with no points from their opening game, while Bromley's win takes them to seventh with three points from one.
