Harvey Barnes scored twice in the second half as Newcastle United came from behind to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the League Cup's second round at St James' Park, sending Matthias Jaissle's side into a third-round tie at Millwall. It was the sides' first meeting since a goalless draw at The Hawthorns in March 2021.
Isaac Price gave West Brom a surprise lead with a free kick in the 18th minute. Newcastle levelled in the 37th minute when new signing Amar Dedic's cross found full debutant Bazoumana Touré, who was replaced by Barnes at half-time. Barnes made it 2-1 in the 47th minute, within two minutes of the restart.
Price levelled again from the penalty spot in the 76th minute, the same minute Newcastle debutant Ewen Jaouen was booked. Barnes settled it in the 80th minute, meeting another Dedic cross to score his second goal against a club he once played for.
West Brom arrived unbeaten in the new season, having beaten League Two Rotherham United in the first round and, four days earlier, Burnley 3-1 in the Championship, with Price scoring twice in that game too. James Morrison made six changes for the trip to Newcastle with Saturday's Championship match at Middlesbrough also in mind.
