Barcelona have completed the signing of João Cancelo on a free transfer, after the Portugal full-back terminated his contract with Al Hilal. Cancelo, 32, has agreed a three-year deal, becoming the club's fifth signing of the summer alongside Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu and Rodri.
It is the third time Cancelo has joined Barça, though the first time he has signed a permanent contract at Camp Nou. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan from Manchester City, before returning for a second loan spell in January this year.
Cancelo came through the academy at Benfica before spells at Valencia, Inter Milan and Juventus preceded a move to Manchester City in 2019. A loan at Bayern Munich in 2023 was followed by his first spell at Barça, then a switch to Al Hilal, before he returned to Camp Nou last January. Winning the LaLiga title in that second loan spell made him the first player this century to win four of Europe's top five leagues, having already won the English, Italian and German titles as well as Portugal's Primeira Liga.
He is capable of playing on either side of the back four or as a winger, though it was at left-back that Hansi Flick used him most often last season. Cancelo will compete with Alejandro Balde and the youngster Jordi Pesquer on that side, with Jules Koundé, Eric García and Xavi Espart the options at right-back. His arrival, coming in the same week as Rodri's from Manchester City, has taken Barça's summer spending beyond €150m before add-ons.
