Villa, who arrived in north London on the back of 11 straight league wins and knowing victory would take them level on points with Arsenal, instead suffered their first defeat in 12 matches and slipped six points behind the leaders. Ollie Watkins' stoppage-time consolation could not disguise how thoroughly Mikel Arteta's side overpowered Unai Emery's men after the interval, just 24 days after losing to them with the last kick of the game at Villa Park.

For 45 minutes Villa looked every inch Arsenal's equals and at times their betters. Emery set his team up to slow the tempo, frustrate the hosts and pounce on mistakes, a plan helped by the absence of Declan Rice, ruled out with a knock for his first missed league game of the season. In Rice's place Arsenal struggled to establish control, with Amadou Onana dominating the midfield exchanges and repeatedly breaking up play as the tension inside the Emirates grew.
