Archer's 90th-Minute Volley Keeps Southampton's Promotion Surge Alive at Swansea

· Match Report

Cameron Archer came off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner and continue Southampton's remarkable charge for promotion from the Championship as the Saints came from behind to beat Swansea 2-1. The substitute volleyed home with his first touch to snatch all three points and extend a sequence that has transformed the south-coast club's season.

Marko Stamenic had given the hosts a deserved lead in a dominant first half for the Welsh side, but Tonda Eckert's half-time introduction of Shea Charles turned the contest. Charles headed an equaliser in the 57th minute before Archer arrowed home in the closing seconds for a seventh successive league win that left Southampton firmly on track for at least the play-offs, while Swansea dropped a place to 15th.

Swansea Seize Control Through Stamenic

After making six changes to the side that beat Leicester, Southampton looked off-colour from the start and Swansea took full advantage. Stamenic and Ji-Sung Eom both had half-efforts blocked as the Welsh side stayed on top through the opening 45 minutes, with the Saints managing just one shot on target before the break.
