Elliot Anderson chose the cruellest of moments to remind Newcastle United exactly what they had given up, the England midfielder burying an 88th-minute equaliser against his former club to earn Nottingham Forest a vital 1-1 draw and move them to the brink of Premier League survival. The point lifted Vitor Pereira's side seven points clear of the relegation zone and extended their unbeaten league run to eight matches.
Harvey Barnes, a second-half substitute, had looked to have settled a game largely devoid of quality when he raced onto Jacob Ramsey's defence-splitting pass to give Newcastle a 74th-minute lead. But Forest, who had been hammered 4-0 by Aston Villa in their Europa League semi-final second leg just three days earlier, rallied through the most fitting of sources as Anderson cancelled out Barnes' opener and dented Newcastle's faint European hopes in the process.
Forest Carve the Better Chances Early
Despite a hurried turnaround from their harrowing night at Villa Park and a treatment room containing Morgan Gibbs-White, Murillo and Ibrahim Sangaré, Forest acquitted themselves well and threatened the most before the break. Dilane Bakwa was at the heart of their best work, terrorising the Newcastle defence down the left flank as he carved out the hosts' brightest moments.
