Agyemang's First Derby Goal Earns Entertaining Draw with Southampton

ยท Match Report

United States international Patrick Agyemang scored his first goal in English football as Derby County fought back to draw 1-1 with Southampton in an open, absorbing Championship contest at Pride Park.

Adam Armstrong's seventh-minute solo strike put the visitors in front, but Agyemang's towering header from Andreas Weimann's cross four minutes before half-time ensured John Eustace's side claimed a point in a game that either team could have won. Both goalkeepers, Derby's Jacob Widell Zetterstrom and Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, produced a string of excellent saves in a contest that underlined Derby's progress but also extended their wait for a home victory, while Will Still's team collected a useful away point without quite capitalising on their flying start.

Armstrong's Early Spark Sets High Tempo

Southampton began with the assurance of a side fresh from their first away win of the season at Sheffield United in midweek. Ryan Manning ought to have opened the scoring inside the opening exchanges when he found space six yards out, only to miss the target, but that let-off did little to wake Derby, and within minutes Saints were in front.
