Aberdeen suffered their heaviest ever European defeat as AEK Athens swept them aside 6-0 in a chastening Europa Conference League night at the noisy OPAP Arena. The result eclipsed the Dons' 4-0 loss to Liverpool in 1980 and 5-1 defeats by Bayern Munich and Sigma Olomouc in 2008 and 2009.
Jimmy Thelin's side, buoyed by back-to-back Premiership wins over Dundee and St Mirren, started with attacking intent in Greece but were overwhelmed once the hosts found their rhythm, slipping to a second straight Conference League loss and the bottom of the group.
Koita Strikes Twice to Set the Tone
Aberdeen's bright opening was punctured in the 11th minute when Aboubakary Koita fired a low strike from the edge of the box into the far corner of Dimitar Mitov's net. The Mauritania international doubled the lead just seven minutes later, latching on to another counter-attack and again slotting into the far corner with ease.
