In a febrile Fratton Park atmosphere, Portsmouth fought back to earn a 1-1 Championship draw with Southampton as Ebou Adams' late header denied their rivals a first league win on this ground in almost 50 years. Leo Scienza had put Saints in front with a composed finish early in the second half, but Adams, a January signing from Derby, bundled in his first goal for Pompey from an Adrian Segecic corner to spark wild home celebrations.
The south-coast derby, played in front of a hostile crowd and underpinned by crunching tackles and flashpoints, rarely settled into a tactical chess match. Southampton created the clearer chances for long spells, with Adam Armstrong twice denied by Nicolas Schmid, and appeared on course to end decades of league frustration at Fratton Park. Portsmouth, who had plenty of the ball but struggled to fashion openings, summoned a late surge that not only preserved local pride but also lifted them out of the Championship drop zone into 21st place. Saints, meanwhile, stayed 15th as their wait for an away clean sheet extended to 25 league games and this fiercely contested fixture ended level for the second time this season.
Armstrong denied as Saints seize early initiative
Southampton made the sharper start on the short journey along the M27, immediately threatening to puncture the noise from three sides of Fratton Park. After Kuryu Matsuki produced a delightful flick in midfield, Finn Azaz slid top scorer Adam Armstrong through on goal, only for the forward's low effort to be blocked by the outstretched left foot of Schmid.
