Tammy Abraham came off the bench to snatch a point for Aston Villa, flicking in an 88th-minute equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw and deny Leeds United what would have been only their second away league win of the season. For long spells it looked as though Anton Stach’s spectacular 30-plus-yard free-kick would prove decisive at a tense Villa Park, before Villa’s pressure finally told from a late set piece.
The result leaves Unai Emery’s side third in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Arsenal and with their outside title ambitions fading, but still well placed in the race for Champions League qualification. For Leeds, newly promoted after winning last season’s Championship, this was another important step towards safety: a resilient performance against one of the division’s best home sides, extending a run of just two defeats in 14 league games.
Stach’s long-range thunderbolt stuns Villa Park
The opening exchanges were cautious as both sides looked for rhythm, but it was Leeds who first discovered any fluency. Jayden Bogle’s clipped ball over the top released Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose early run exposed space behind Villa’s defence, only for Emiliano Martínez to race from his line and smother the chance. It was an early warning that Daniel Farke’s side, despite their poor away record, had travelled with intent.
